650 Parliament Street Accommodation Letter

Dear Resident,

The City of Toronto is committed to assisting residents of 650 Parliament Street during this difficult time.

This letter provides updated information about the continuation of assistance from the City of Toronto available to your household as a result of being displaced from 650 Parliament St.

Contacting the property manager for assistance:

The property manager of 650 Parliament Street is working to secure short-term accommodations for those in need. Please stay in touch with building management via 416-929-3532, on Twitter @650parliament and online at http://wpsq.ca/.

For Residents temporarily housed in hotels:

As you may recall, you were advised at the time of registration that the location of your temporary accommodation may change at any time due to available space. Emergency lodging being provided may include commercial accommodation or the use of City emergency shelter services.

You will need to check out some time between Aug 31 and Sept 4 depending on your location. However, it is strongly advised that you secure alternative accommodations as soon as possible. You are also advised to keep any and all records and receipts associated with moving locations and temporary accommodation as you may be entitled to compensation by the landlord and/or insurance if applicable.

We continue to encourage you to seek accommodation with family and friends if possible.

Reception Centre at Regent Park Community Centre - 12:00 pm August 31st:

In the event that you have no other options for accommodation, the City will be opening a reception centre at Regent Park Community Centre, 402 Shuter St. as of Noon (12:00 pm) on Friday, August 31st and will provide the following:

- cots available for overnight accommodation

- meals for overnight residents

- locked storage cupboard for personal belongings

- animal services for pet care

For all residents of 650 Parliament Street:

The Red Cross hotline is still available for assistance and inquiries about services and accommodations 1-855-797-8875.

Everyone who needs it will be given accommodation at Regent Park. Once again, the City of Toronto is committed to helping you connect to the services you need during this difficult time.

CORRECTION TO LETTER FROM CITY OF TORONTO

The letter from the City of Toronto sent on August 29, 2018 directs tenants of 650 Parliament to call 647-760-7339 for assistance. This phone number is correct, but it is the 650 Parliament Help Line, not the Wellesley Parliament Square Management Office.  Those who still require help finding short-term housing, when you call the Help Line, leave your name, apartment number, phone number and the number of people who live in your apartment.

a Letter to the neighbours

Dear Resident(s) Wellesley Parliament Square

Like you, we are shocked and extremely upset about the six-alarm fire that occurred on August 21, causing the tenants at 650 Parliament to evacuate their building. There was no fire and the smoke was cleared, but several building systems are not functioning, such as lighting, elevators and fire protection services.

The City of Toronto and Red Cross have been working hard to help find temporary accommodations for the displaced tenants who cannot move in with family. Right now, they are being housed in the Regent Park and Wellesley Community Centres. Although this is a welcome immediate solution, it is uncomfortable for many people, especially the young and the elderly.

We are reaching out to you and the other tenants in Wellesley Parliament Square to ask if you are able to offer temporary accommodations to those who are displaced, please contact us through the special email and website that we created. These are your neighbours, and we like to think of Wellesley Parliament Square as a community in the most caring sense of the word.

We are not allowed into the building until the Fire Marshal gives us permission. We are in continual communication with that office, and as soon as we are allowed, our working crews will get into the building to begin repairs.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you are willing to offer accommodation to any tenants, feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

WILL I RETURN HOME TO RAISED RENT?

We have been made aware of concerns that displaced tenants of 650 Parliament will face rent raises when they return to their apartments.

This is not true.

WE’RE ON TRACK FOR ESTIMATED MOVE-INS

Reconstruction is well underway, and as we posted before, we have approximate move-in dates for our tenants who were displaced by the August 21st fire.

  • Damage to the NORTH TOWER is less extensive. Tentatively, those tenants can move back in for THANKSGIVING, as long as restoration work continues to go according to plan.

  • The SOUTH TOWER sustained more damage. It could be ready as early as 15 weeks from now.
